About

"This recording takes you on a musical journey through the seventeenth century, exploring the rise and development of the solo sonata in Italy, the land of its origin, and the increasingly idiomatic writing for the violin as a solo instrument. It is also a personal journey, with the inclusion of several “old friends” (pieces I have performed for many years) as well as repertoire, new to me, that I have sought out for this recording." - Theresa Caudle

Theresa Caudle comes from a musical family with a particularly keen interest in renaissance and baroque music. Having studied the violin from an early age, Theresa took up the cornett at the age of thirteen, becoming one of the foremost performers on it whilst still a teenager and a pioneer in the revival of this instrument, being the first person to play it at a professional level with the authentic, acorn-shaped mouthpiece.

Although Theresa is a still a regular member of The London Handel Orchestra and the orchestra of The Sixteen, she is now very active running and directing her own ensemble Canzona, formed in 1992, both in chamber music concerts and in collaborations with choirs.

In 2007, Theresa made the decision to give more time and emphasis to her cornett playing, and has since then been increasingly active on this instrument, appearing with The English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, QuintEssential Sackbut and Cornett Ensemble and The Magdalena Consort, as well as with Canzona where she often combines playing violin and cornett in the same programme.

Canzona:
- Theresa Caudle, violin, cornett & director
- Mark Caudle, bass violin and violoncello
- Alastair Ross, organ and harpsichord
- David Miller, chitarrone
