About

Tárrega’s importance in the development of the modern Spanish guitar cannot be over-emphasized. Apart from his universal fame as an executant, his extensive original compositions and transcriptions have added a number of the most famous pieces ever written for the instrument to the repertoire – but his development of the technique of guitar-playing alone, unique in its day and of lasting significance, would have ensured his immortality in the annals of the instrument.

Tárrega’s published music divides into two parts: his original compositions and his arrangements of other music. In this recital, we have a collection of examples from both. His original compositions embrace Studies, Dances, Waltzes, Preludes, etc – none of these is particularly long as an individual piece, yet such is their appeal that they have entered the repertoire of all concert guitarists today (and have remained so from when they first appeared) and several have become amongst the most famous and well-loved original pieces ever written for the instrument.

Recorded: 2008.
