Edith PiafAbout
Edith Gassion (1915-1963), who became the “little sparrow” Edith Piaf, epitomises French cabaret-singing, her dramatic style and anguished voice recognised instantly the world over. She overcame desperate poverty and affliction to become the brightest of French stars – the best-loved chanteuse of them all.
While there is no shortage of CDs covering the familiar hits from Piaf's later years, 'La vie en rose' offers a portrait of a unique career over 22 years, perfectly summing up the very best of her recordings, from her first session in 1935, up to 1957.
There are 45 classic songs here, among them such eternal favourites as Mon légionnaire, L’accordéoniste, the haunting Tu es partout (so evocatively used in the film Saving Private Ryan), Les trois cloches (with her protégés Les Compagnons de la Chanson), Hymne à l'amour and of course the immortal La vie en rose.
The highly acclaimed 2007 film biography La vie en rose, starring the Oscar-winning Marion Cotillard, focused attention once more on Edith Piaf. Here, on a treasurable Retrospective 2 CD set, are 2 hours 37 minutes of the original recordings of the singer whose voice was the very soul of Paris.
