Ragna Schirmer (piano)About
Sonatas mingle easily with variations – this time she has included those on “Gott erhalte” (the tune of the German national anthem) – and the big surprise in this selection is likely to be the seldom played “St Catherine’s Day Minuets”, which in her hands become delightful miniatures.
In her performance, Ragna Schirmer succeeds in shaping every phrase organically into its finest nuances and in taking any hint of the ordinary out of even the transitional figures: she presents a fascinating picture of Haydn, gripping from the first to the last note.
