About

Volume VI of András Schiff’s much acclaimed live Beethoven cycle in chronological order offers five masterworks from the so-called “middle period” ie the first decade of the 19th century, when among other groundbreaking compositions, the “Eroica” Symphony was written.

The CD features two of his most popular sonatas, those named ‘Appassionata’ (No 23 in F minor) and ‘Les Adieux’ (No 26 in E flat) as well as the neglected Op 54 Sonata, and Opp. 78 and 79.

These are modern renderings, faithful to the score, performed on two different grand pianos - like all Schiff’s Beethoven recitals, some sonatas were played on a Bösendorfer, others on a Steinway.

The accompanying booklet has a highly enlightening interview by Martin Meyer with András Schiff.

Recorded live from Zurich’s Town Hall.

Critical acclaim for the first five albums:
We are in for a memorable and individual cycle” (Sunday Times, on Vol I)
One of the great Beethoven sonata sets” (Fanfare, on Vol II)
A distinguished instalment in an outstanding cycle” (The Observer, on Vol III)
Stimulating and provocative…a magnificent release” (BBC Music Magazine 5-star review for Vol 4)
András Schiff leads the pack of top pianists recording Beethoven sonatas. His touch with these middle-period works is revelatory…” (Album of the Week, The Independent, on Vol V)
