Engel Lund’s Book of Folk Songs is a unique published collection of 49 folk songs from 14 countries, here performed by young singers in their native languages. It was assembled by the Danish soprano Engel Lund and her accompanist Ferdinand Rauter. These two extraordinary artists were passionate about bringing people closer to each other through the power of music, and in pursuit of this aim gave hundreds of performances of these songs throughout Europe and the United States in the 1930s and 40s.

 

Engel Lund’s book of folk song is unique for a number of reasons. It is the only collection I know that brings together songs from so many different countries in their original language, combined with a singable translation into English. It was assembled by two extraordinary artists who were passionate about bringing people closer to each other through the power of music, and went ahead to do just that in hundreds of performances of these songs all over Europe and the United States in the 1930s and 40s. Now, 70 years after Oxford University Press first published it, I was able to find young singers in London who could record the complete collection for the first time, singing in their native languages.
