About

In spite of the political disturbances of the year, Schumann regarded 1849 as one of the most fruitful in his career. His compositions of 1849 include a wealth of choral music, written principally for the choral society he had established in Dresden, both for mixed choir and for female voices.

Robert Schumann's a cappella choral works have established themselves on the concert stage far less than those of Mendelssohn or Brahms. He himself, however, accorded them a much higher position among his works, writing that they were composed ‘with true passion’, and that nothing of their kind existed.

This gorgeous selection of songs offers an overview of the wide variety of form, character and atmosphere of Schumann's lieder. The nature of the songs ranges from darkly menacing, dramatic ballads to rapturous expressions of love, magical evocations of nature and mysterious night pieces.
