About

This premiere, in honour of the new Opera House, was attended by many critics. It was a great success for the Cologne Opera and represented a milestone in modern music. Almost all the critics were in agreement with the reviewer for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, who wrote that this performance had "derived its strongest profile from the musical realization".
Günter Wand's decisive part as the "supreme figure of this evening" was stressed repeatedly. Die Welt wrote that "Wand illuminated the score right down to its finest rhythmic and tonal values and melodic vibrations and, without overdoing the drama, lent its profundity a magic transparency."
The Kölner Stadtanzeiger said that under Wand's musical direction the orchestra had performed "with elegant boldness, spiritual elegance and intense brilliance", and that the conductor had "completely assimilated the work, not only in music, but also in spirit." The composer thanked his conductor on the stage, afterwards also presenting him with the premiere score bearing the following dedication: "For Günter Wand, who was the first to bring dead notes to life."
Bluthochzeit (Blood Wedding): Poetic tragedy in two acts (seven scenes)
Text by Federico García Lorca
