About

The ninth in this series of Maria Callas’ operas at La Scala, the great singer here takes on one of the indefatigable greats of the Romantic opera genre: Verdi’s Aida.

The recording is conducted by Tullio Serafin, who conducted a large number of Callas’s La Scala recordings. Although at the time not on the roster of artists at La Scala, he certainly proves his worth through the eloquent and idiomatic playing of his orchestra.

Praise for this recording: “How beautifully she caressed the phrases [in the final duet] starting “Vedi? di morte l’angelo”, touching gently the notes marked staccato, ravishing the ear with the downward portamento from the high B-flat.” Opera
