About

This recording was one of the last to be done in the former Frauenkirche Dresden before it was destroyed in 1945.

It contains a 1944 radio recording of Richard Strauss's Festive Prelude in the Dresden Frauenkirche is an astonishing rediscovery and a real treasure. The veritably monumental score was performed for the first time in 1913 under the composer's baton to mark the opening of the Konzerthaus in Vienna (the youthful Karl Böhm was present at the event). There is no evidence that the Staatskapelle had ever performed the work in public prior to that recording, which is dated May 17, 1944. The occasion was Richard Strauss's eightieth birthday in May 1944.

It is therefore very likely that, wanting to give Strauss a special treat, the orchestra invited him to attend the recording of the Festive Prelude in the unique Frauenkirche, where the lustre of the "Strauss orchestra" could mingle with the wonderful sound of the large Silbermann organ. For technical reasons, it would have been impossible for the Semperoper to accommodate such a gigantic contingent of musicians for a special presentation. The conductor was Kurt Striegler, who was the reliable and experienced kapellmeister of the Dresden Opera almost continuously from 1905 to 1953.

Now that the Frauenkirche has been rebuilt and newly consecrated in October 2005, this recording should prove to be a historical document of inestimable value.
