About

In the sixteenth century, Leuven and Antwerp were the most important music publishing centres in the Southern Netherlands and from 1545 to 1578 the Phalesius family held the monopoly in the music publishing industry.

The production of Petrus (c.1510-1576) was by sixteenth century standards, very impressive. In 33 years he printed no less than 189 books of music. The Leuven Dance Book appeared in 1571 and the 101 titles in this dance book mostly refer to old French dances. Research has revealed that this edition is an anthology of the most popular dances from the middle of the sixteenth century. The genre offers an extraordinary rich palette and diversity of sound, which is perfectly illustrated by the constantly varying ensemble strength on this CD.
