About

The Munich Philharmonic was one of two large German orchestras that Günter Wand regularly conducted whilst he was alive (the other being Berlin Philharmonic).

Following on from Profil’s Günter Wand Edition, which featured previously unreleased radio recordings, this new disc highlights Wand’s conducting skills with this top German orchestra, in its new series - Günter Wand and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

It documents the best digitally remastered ‘live recordings’ of Classical-Romantic repertoire, including Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, Op. 68 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, Op. 21.

Beethoven’s First Symphony, marks the beginning of a stylistic development which continued through the entire ninetieth century and into the early twentieth, which influenced composers such as Brahms and Bruckner up to Gustav Mahler.
