About

Hovering on the threshold of the twentieth century, Elgar’s Sea Pictures represent the fascination and mystery associated with the ocean.  His only song cycle with orchestra, the songs’ superb orchestration deftly creates colours that heighten the words and images of the poetry; ‘Where Corals Lie’ is perhaps the most remarkable three minutes in all of Elgar.

Inspired by the notion that artists are the real creators and inspiration for mankind and the true makers of history and society, The Music Makers is a largely intimate and nostalgic work, which quotes several times from Elgar’s other compositions.

Both works display Elgar’s perfect ear for the melancholic quality of the contralto voice. Praising Sarah Connolly in a recent review, Gramophone mused that: “her success with [the listener] is again unmistakable and fully merited.”
