Viewing Schubert – who opened the door to 19th century Romanticism by infusing classical form with rich emotional depth – through a 21st-century lens, their interpretation illuminates the composer’s forward thinking and innovative spirit. The cycle will span five volumes by 2028, including the seven completed symphonies, the beloved but incomplete Symphony no.7 (8) “Unfinished”, and selected overtures. Volume 1 features two of Schubert’s most iconic works: Symphony no.7 (8) “Unfinished” – widely regarded as the essence of Romanticism – and Symphony no.4 “Tragic” – dramatic and bold, written in C minor, a key favoured by Beethoven.
The distinctive qualities of Järvi and DKAM shine through in these performances, recorded in optimal session conditions by Polyhymnia and produced by Philip Traugott. Performing materials were sourced from the 1996 Urtext of the New Schubert Edition (no.7) and the 1998 Bärenreiter Ausgabe 5605 (no.4), published by Bärenreiter Verlag, Kassel.
