About

A nocturne, as the title implies, is a "night piece," and most people assume for that reason that the music must be slow and dreamy--and indeed, much of it is. But "Night Music" also includes vivacious serenades, love songs accompanied by guitar, processional music--in short, the full range of musical expression. So several of Chopin's Nocturnes are not especially slow, and some are both quick and agitated. As an art form, the piano nocturne was invented by John Field. But it was Chopin who realized the full degree of Romantic poetry inherent in the name, and it was Rubinstein who conveyed Chopin's mesmerizing musical message as no one had before. --David Hurwitz
