About
One of César Franck’s most well-known pieces, Prélude, Fugue et Variation, particularly evokes associations with music-making in the French salon. At the world premiere in 1874, the composer himself played the harmonium, with his student, the young French musicologist and composer Vincent D’Indy, at the piano.
Another student of Franck, Charles Tournemire, makes use of the full tonal palette with a multitude of performance indications for tempo, character and timbre in Poème mystique. Similarly, Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s character pieces, Poesien, use an astonishing variety of forms and timbres.
Strongly influenced by Tournemire, Flor Peeters wrote a double concerto dedicated to his pianist daughter Lieva. Using two such distinct instruments equally is a challenge that Peeters masters in an exemplary manner. Virtuoso solo passages alternate with the most intimate duets: a real treat for Blanchard and von Busch – and a delight for listeners who appreciate this unique pairing.
