About
Performing on a fine copy of the harpsichord by Johann Christoph Österlein and concluding with the chorale setting for organ on Wenn wir in höchsten Noten, BWV668a, recorded in Grauhof, Germany, listeners can enjoy the 1751 print verbatim for the first time. James Johnstone is joined by Carole Cerasi (Gramophone Award-winning harpischordist) on two tracks requiring a duet partner.
This physical release CD is presented with a 24-page booklet which is illustrated with images of the first publication and includes an essay on the work by Jon Baxendale and a personal note from James Johnstone on his approach to this masterpiece.
Bach’s extraordinary masterwork includes fourteen fugues (called contrapuncti) and four canons in D minor, each using a variation of a principal subject, increasing in complexity at each step. It will entertain and enchant all students of Bach.
