About

Alessandro Scarlatti’s Il trionfo dell’onore (The Triumph of Honour) – his only comic opera – was first performed in Naples in 1718. With its distinctive recitatives and expressive arias, and a cast including four pairs of lovers, it can be considered one of the forerunners of opera buffa. The central character is the unrepentant seducer Riccardo Albenori, a Don Giovanni-like figure though without the villainous aura. In this opera, Scarlatti ensures not only perceptive psychology but a rich variety of arias, duets and quartets that generate the work’s pathos as well as its humour and eroticism.

‘Giulia Bolcato stands out for the intensity of her phrasing and impeccable intonation, qualities that are not lacking in Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli, Rosa Bove (a burnished timbre and imposing personality) and Raffaele Pe, who completes the parterre of the serious roles with impetus and passion...’ – Musica

‘The Teatro La Fenice Orchestra, conducted by Enrico Onofri, made the musical atmosphere perfectly in line with the dynamics of the opera, supporting the singers with elegance and precision. The baroque sonorities enhanced the theatrical context, giving a touch of refinement to the performance...’ – Notizie teatrali

‘...Right from the fast-paced, nervous overture, conductor Enrico Onofri’s energy infuses the Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice with irresistible vitality, setting the scene for a whirlwind plot and sparkling vocal numbers. The role of Riccardo Albenori, the repentant seducer, is interpreted with disconcerting virtuosity by Giulia Bolcato, whose agile vocalism is particularly evident in Con quei occhi, where the flamboyant ornaments underline the character’s changeable temperament.’ – Baroquiade
