About
This album, a CD-book of 140 pages with personal text written by Appl alongside numerous previously unpublished photos and letters, offers us a glimpse into who Fischer-Dieskau was as a person, outside of his obvious public successes and accolades. The repertoire in this touching recording is structured to reflect the major stages of his life and includes compositions by family members Albert and Klaus Fischer-Dieskau, repertoire he sang as a soldier during WW2 and as a POW in Italy, commissions composed especially for him through to favourite Lieder by Schubert.

Reviews
Presented in physical form as an elegant CD book with an interesting biographical commentary, For Dieter aims to guide us through the twists and turns of Fischer-Dieskau’s life – German prisoner of war, international success, domestic tragedy – using songs from his repertoire (or thereabouts) as illustrations. Geoff Brown
‘Hommage ŕ Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’ feels essential as a total package, partly as a case study in uniquely sustained vocal achievement. ... Whether or not Appl felt duty-bound to give back to the master with this tribute, I hope he considers this mission accomplished and goes forward to projects without such extramusical responsibility – along with pianist James Baillieu, who finds occasions to sparkle in the most modest repertoire. David Patrick Stearns
The centenary tribute that Appl has put together to his teacher with pianist James Baillieu is thoughtful and handsomely produced. The disc of 32 songs is well chosen to reflect every stage in Fischer-Dieskau’s life, from his childhood, through his years as a soldier and prisoner of war during the second world war, the steady upward curve of his career through the 1950s and 60s, to the eminence of his later years.
