About

Chilean-American tenor Jonathan Tetelman and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Musical Director Daniel Harding announce their upcoming album, on which they are joined by an array of performers to present Puccini’s operatic thriller Tosca.

This staging not only commemorates the Puccini anniversary but also marks the official debut of Harding as the orchestra’s new Music Director, conducting his first ever performances of the tragic opera. With an all-star cast on board, led by star tenor Jonathan Tetelman and soprano Eleonora Buratto as ill-fated lovers, their presentation of Tosca made a fitting tribute to Puccini in the year of the centenary of his death. They were joined by French baritone Ludovic Tézier who sings Baron Scarpia, the brutal chief of police who proves their undoing. These experienced performers conjured the drama of an opera as a concert performance that highlights the slightest vocal and orchestral nuance – every detail of Puccini’s fantastic writing can be heard.

Cast:
- Floria Tosca: Eleonora Buratto (soprano)
- Mario Cavaradossi: Jonathan Tetelman (tenor)
- Il barone Sarpia: Ludovic Tézier (baritone)
- Cesare Angelotti: Giorgi Manoshvili (bass)
- Il Sagrestano: Davide Giangregorio (bass)
- Spoletta: Matteo Macchioni (tenor)
- Sciarrone: Nicolò Ceriani (baritone)

Reviews

Harding’s reading tends towards the symphonic rather than theatrical, the rich Santa Cecilia strings nicely heavy on the carbs, with imposing heavyweight brass. ... In Tosca, all three main characters wind up dead. And Harding’s principals are all to die for. I’ve enjoyed Tetelman’s Cavaradossi in the theatre before, and his sunny tone and warm vibrato are most appealing. ... Buratto is in gorgeous voice but her soprano has steel, too, making a viperish diva who allows her jealous streak to show all too easily in Act 1. After his dramatic initial appearance – those chords send a shiver up the spine – Tézier’s Scarpia is suave and aristocratic in his cat-and-mouse toying with Tosca. ... this new account boasts the finest Tosca cast of the digital era and is a recording I’ll be returning to often in years to come.  Mark Pullinger (Recording of the Month)
