Adolphe Adam is famous for the popular ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, with his stage works being highly influential in the development of 19th-century musical theatre, most especially in the evolution of the Romantic ballet. The colourful and innovative Griseldis, ou Les Cinq Sens narrates the adventures of Elfrid the Crown Prince of Bohemia, on a journey of discovery and growing self-awareness as he travels to meet his prospective bride, Griseldis, Princess of Moldova. Heard here in its world-premiere recording, Griseldis is one of Adam’s most important ballets.

Conductor Dario Salvi’s versatile repertoire has earned numerous awards, including the 2023 ‘Riccardo Drigo’ Music for Ballet prize and a 2022 ICMA nomination. His passion for rediscovering forgotten masterpieces and curating world premieres has brought him global recognition.

The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Dario Salvi, and harpist Vesela Trichkova excel in Adam’s ballets. Their recording of Orfa (Naxos 8574478) was praised for its colour, energy, and melody. Critics commend Salvi’s sensitivity, dynamic control, and ability to capture both elegance and vibrancy.

This Naxos debut marks soprano Marija Jelić as a rising Balkan star. She has performed leading roles in opera productions and festivals worldwide, including a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 2021, showcasing her growing international presence.
