About
Michail Travlos addresses an extremely difficult problem of composition with the collection of solo works presented in this record. Especially in the case of one solo (unaccompanied) instrument (only one work here represents a “dialogue” between two instruments: cello and piano, making things some somewhat easier), such difficulties compound themselves to a degree, that only first-rate composers can truly master. Among an impressive number of really “good” composers in Greece, I know of only very few (Xenakis, Skalkottas, Mamangakis, Logothetis, Y.A. Papaioannou, Apergis) who have successfully tackled this ascetic and demanding genre, producing works of outstanding merit. It is all too easy to easy to engage in such an exercise, say with virtuoso works, without actually understanding the implications of the strict limitation imposed in such writing that keeps somewhat less able composers at distance from true musical achievements.
