About
Although Johannes Brahms’s Quartet no.1 in G minor is the best known of his three piano quartets, Zimerman instead focuses on the sometimes-overlooked Piano Quartets no.2 and no.3 in order to give them the attention they deserve. He adds, “I particularly love the Third Quartet. It’s crazy. It’s so powerful. It has unbelievable drive.” For this recording Krystian Zimerman teamed up with cellist Yuya Okamoto, violinist Maria Nowak and violist Katarzyna Budnik.
Reviews
Notwithstanding the yellow label’s Zimerman-centred promotional branding, this outstanding recording of Brahms’s two later piano quartets (minus the more often-heard G minor) is as ego-free and egalitarian as they come: not an ounce of gratuitous showmanship, either from Zimerman or from his colleagues. That by no means equates to bland or faceless interpretation. ... In short, this is chamber music-making of the highest order, and I can only hope that the ensemble will give us the G minor Quartet in the nearest future. Michelle Assay
