About

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), celebrated for his masterful compositions and poignant storytelling, remains one of the most beloved opera composers of all time. This collection, crafted for both opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike, brings together his most renowned masterpieces alongside lesser-known gems waiting to be discovered or rediscovered. Each opera is presented in stunning performances by world-class orchestras, conductors, and singers, capturing the emotional depth and musical brilliance that define Puccini’s legacy. To complete this journey through Puccini’s genius, we have included his Messa di Gloria and some illustrious recitals, such as the iconic 1954 performance by Maria Callas.

Born on 22 December 1858, in Lucca, Tuscany, Puccini hailed from a family with a strong musical tradition. His early musical education was influenced by his family’s legacy, but it was his attendance at a performance of Verdi’s Aida in 1876 that inspired him to pursue a career in opera.

Puccini studied at the Milan Conservatory, where he developed his compositional skills. His first successful opera, Manon Lescaut, premiered in 1893, establishing him as a significant composer. This success was followed by a string of operatic masterpieces, including La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madama Butterfly (1904). These works are celebrated for their rich orchestration, memorable melodies, and deep emotional resonance. In 1910, Puccini premiered La Fanciulla del West in New York, further cementing his international reputation. His final opera, Turandot, remained incomplete at his death in 1924 and was later finished by Franco Alfano.

Puccini passed away on 29 November 1924, in Brussels, Belgium, following complications from throat cancer. Characterised by lyrical beauty, dramatic intensity, and ability to convey profound human emotions his operas continue to be beloved worldwide, securing his legacy as one of the greatest opera composers in history.
