About
"I have been drawn to Goethe’s Faust since I was a student," says Mark Austin. "The poetry's blend of love, tragedy, and philosophy has inspired countless composers. With this album, we present an overview of Faust's best-known drama through some of its most intriguing songs. I hope this journey will also inspire listeners to delve into Goethe’s original text."
A standout feature of the album is the inclusion of diverse musical settings of the same text, allowing listeners to appreciate how different composers interpret Goethe's verses. Highlights include Kreutzer’s Faust im Studierzimmer, Mussorgsky’s Mephistopheles’ Song in Auerbach’s Tavern, and Schubert’s poignant Gretchen am Spinnrade.
The recording also features the emotive Der König in Thule with settings by Schubert, Liszt, and Coleridge-Taylor, among others, showcasing the versatility and depth of Goethe's influence on music.
Additionally, the album presents two solo piano pieces, capturing the essence of domestic music-making in the nineteenth century, and offering a chance to experience the intimate and contemplative side of the Faust legend.
Mark Austin and his ensemble deliver a performance that honours the historical significance of these works and brings a fresh, engaging perspective to the timeless tale of Faust.
