Howard GriffithsAbout
Griffiths has decided to record a colorful and expressive "bouquet" of Turkish symphonic music for this album, giving a stage to representatives of the "Turkish Five" and Ferit Tüzün as a composer of the next generation, and then presenting examples of music as it is composed today by Turkish composers, including the world-famous pianist and composer Fazıl Say.
"Fazıl Say's Şahmeran op.85 for cello, percussion and orchestra takes as its starting point the Anatolian legend of the snake queen Şahmeran , whose realm is discovered by a young man who promises to keep his discovery a secret, but then betrays her and provokes her death. In the first part, Say opulently depicts the realm of the Snake Queen and in the second, more emotional part, the betrayal. Say knows very well what he can get out of the orchestra in terms of effects and colours, and he does it masterfully."
