Thomas Dunford’s first project for Warner Classics: a complete Handel programme recorded with his Ensemble Jupiter, while he conducts and plays the lute.
Starring mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and British countertenor lestyn Davies, who have been musical partners for years.
It stems from the desire to bring together these two sublime voices and tell a love story with some of Handel’s most beautiful spiritual music.
Thomas and Lea went through Handel’s entire English-language oeuvre during the pandemic – oratorios, arias, etc. – to build the narrative of a strong love story between the two heroes.
Featuring arias from Semele, Theodora, Saul, Susanna, Esther, and more.
Thomas calls the programme “a baroque West Side Story”.

There is no shortage of Handel aria albums around, but not all take as much care in the planning as this one. Nor do many mine Handel’s English oratorios rather than his Italian operas. ... Semele’s ‘No, no, I’ll take no less’ is an absolute belter – the more flexible orchestral sound world is an excellent fit for [Lea Desandre’s] skills in vocal colour and text ...
