About

With their sumptuous intermedi, the artists of late sixteenth-century Florence sought to achieve the perfect blend between music and poetry.

Inserted into plays imitating the ancient writers, these lavish entertainments were soon to give birth to opera, under the pen of such composers as Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi and Gagliano.

Rather than attempting an impossible reconstruction, Raphaël Pichon has devised an imaginary intermedio by summoning the figures of Apollo, Orpheus and Eurydice and, above all, Cupid, l’Amore.

Music by Lorenzo Allegri, Antonio Brunelli, Giovanni Battista Buonamente, Giulio Caccini, Emilio de’ Cavalieri, Girolamo Fantini, Marco da Gagliano, Cristofano Malvezzi, Luca Marenzio, Alessandro Orologio, Jacopo Peri, Alessandro Striggio
