Baiba Skride is almost unparalleled in her virtuosic, idiomatic mastery of the standard repertoire, but that is not all, for her concert calendar and discography also repeatedly feature works by lesser-known composers.
In September 2013 she played Karol Szymanowski’s First Violin Concerto at the Proms in London. She also recorded the Second Violin Concerto in the studio, along with the duo cycle 'Myths' with Lauma Skride at the piano.
Concert Reviews:
“It was pretty much a model performance, vivid and immediate of rhythm and with moments of genuine magic - like the expectant hush before the finale’s main allegro (a super-contrast in tempo from the brooding introduction) and the mystical, almost Brucknerian, preparation for the coda… the gifted Latvian violinist Baiba Skride announcing her presence through an upper register so ethereal and so true and so touched with ecstasy that it sounded like a figment of the imagination, a rarefied species among Szymanowski’s nocturnal chorus of bird-like woodwinds.” - Edward Seckerson, The Arts Desk **** 3rd September 2013
“Latvian violinist Baiba Skride sailed over the orchestra’s magic forest with long lines of melody, silver and sweet. Given the Albert Hall’s acoustic and the orchestra’s size, it would have been easy for Skride to be gobbled up. But the composer’s discernment and Petrenko’s skill kept her always in play, a firefly dancing above other fireflies. I didn’t want the dream to end.” - Geoff Brown, The Times **** 4th September 2013
