Christmas carols are such an essential part of Advent and Christmas season. The earliest examples of Christmas carols are written either in Latin or a combination of Latin and German. Several are familiar to everyone: In dulci jubilo can be traced back to approximately 1335.

Several other songs from this charming collection have been known for centuries, such as the wonderfully mystical Es kommit ein Schiff geladen - 15th century, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen - 1587. The version by Michael Praetorius, and probably the loveliest, dates from 1609 and is the one used on this recording.

Simon Halsey is one of the most sought-after choral conductors, his reputation made when Simon Rattle appointed him director of the CBSO Chorus in 1982 when he was only 22 years of age.
