Arthur Schoonderwoerd (piano)About
Arthur Schoonderwoerd is one of the leading performers of his generation on historical keyboard instruments and has developed an intense passion for their individual touch and tonal characteristics. His artistic activities focus on research into the works of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and their interpretation.
Schoonderwoerd has now released a recording of Mozart’s complete Piano Sonatas on six CDs. He selected three different instruments for the performance of these works: a tangent-action piano based on Spaeth & Schmahl (ca. 1770), a fortepiano with hammerheads not covered in leather based on Johann Andreas Stein (ca. 1780) and an unfretted clavichord (model dating from ca. 1780). This selection guarantees a wide range of tonal variety.
Arthur Schoonderwoerd has devoted himself intensively to the issue surrounding the decoration of repeated sections and the correct execution of ornaments. In his performances, he permits himself far greater freedom than numerous other Mozart interpreters.
Arthur Schoonderwoerd’s historically accurate, humorous and freely improvisatory style sheds a completely new light on this allegedly familiar repertoire.
