About
As a student of Wilhelm Kempff, and according to his own inner inclination, Gerhard Oppitz has been praised worldwide as a performer of Romantic piano works, especially those by German composers. He also loves to perform the large scale cyclical works, such as those by Beethoven or Schubert, on several consecutive evenings.
"Variations" could be the theme of this 10th volume in his recordings of Schubert's piano works. It presents as its central work the “Wanderer Fantasy”, in which the second movement contains a set of variations on the famous song "The Wanderer" D489. Oppitz achieves a momentous emotional climax in his performance.
Also included is the comparably intense Piano Sonata D784 plus the Variation on a Waltz by Diabelli, D718 and the "Hüttenbrenner" Variations D576.
