A Polish pianist of Bulgarian descent, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron reached the semifinals of the 9th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1975, 4th honourable mention), the International Alessandro Casagrande Piano Competition in Terni, Italy (1975) and the ARD Piano Competition in Munich (1978).
She gives performances in Poland and abroad, and her repertoire ranges from the baroque to 20th-century music, with special emphasis on the compositions of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy and Bartók. She has also premiered a number of Polish contemporary works. She is very active as a chamber musician.
Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń is also a music teacher. She is invited to hold master classes in Poland and abroad, as well as seminars for piano teachers, open lessons and consultations. She has served on the juries of numerous national and international competitions.
Her students have won top prizes in piano competitions worldwide and achieved recognition as concert pianists. Some of them are also successful teachers. Her pupils include Rafał Blechacz, winner of the 15th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2005), the well known jazzman Krzysztof Herdzin, and one of the winners of the 2010 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Paweł Wakarecy.
